Percy Panda and the New Student

Percy Panda had been at school for a month now and all the morning butterflies had gone. It was Wednesday and all the children were lined up outside the classroom waiting for Miss Owl.

“I can remember my ABC’s all the way up to “L” now,” Monica Monkey boasted to the others.

“Well I know which are my odd numbers and even numbers,” Erica Elephant responded with a grin.

“Good morning class!” Miss Owl sung out as she walked up to her young class.

“Good morning Miss Owl!” the children chimed back.

“Please hurry in and take your seats children I have a surprise for you all,” Miss Owl told the class.

As the children walked to their seats whispers could be heard among them about what the surprise could be.

“I bet it’s a field trip,” Lisa Leopard whispered.

“Pfft it’s probably another addition test,” Albert Alligator grumbled.

“Quiet down please class,” Miss Owl said signalling the class to hush down with her wings. “Today we have a new student. I would like you all to meet Mark Meerkat.” Mark Meerkat stepped out from behind Miss Owl hands behind his back looking down in a shy manor.

“What’s a meerkat; that kid just looks like a mini weasel!” Albert Alligator yelled out before bursting into laughter.

“Albert be quiet you are being very rude!” Miss Owl said sternly.

“Haha, but he’s so tiny!” Albert Alligator chuckled.

Mark Meerkat crept back behind Miss Owl.

“He’s not a weasel at all, his kind are in fact very brave,” Erica Elephant said softly.

“Go on please Erica,” Miss Owl said with a smile.

“Well it’s just that when my family and I were on holidays in Africa last year visiting family we met a meerkat clan. We were told that there is always at least six looking out for predators while the others work and if they see one of the clan in danger they gather round them to make them look big and intimi … intimi … “ Erica stuttered trying to find the word.

“Intimidating? Is that what you’re trying to say Erica?” Miss Owl asked.

“Yes Miss Owl thank you. They are a very social and family driven species,” Erica said beaming.

“That’s right my family have always looked out for each other and it was hard for us to leave but dad was transferred here to learn new tunnelling designs,” Mark Meerkat said as a smile formed on his face.

“Thank you Erica for helping make Mark feel more comfortable,” Miss Owl said with a proud smile on her face.

“Most welcome Miss Owl,” Erica Elephant replied.

“Mark please take your seat and we’ll start today’s class,” Miss Owl said as she picked up a piece of chalk to begin writing on the black board.

“Yes Miss Owl!” the entire class chimed back at once.
